About
Understanding trauma and its impact is essential for fostering healthier communities. In Canada, national statistics reveal the widespread prevalence of trauma: three-quarters of adults have experienced trauma, while two-thirds of males and 90% of females under 18 report significant distress. Among children, over half (ages 2–14) and nearly two-thirds (ages 15–17) experienced violence within the past year. Much of this trauma occurs in familiar relationships, but these same relational spaces can offer opportunities for healing. Trust, felt safety, and a balance of nurture and structure are key ingredients for recovery. By pairing compassion with a commitment to developing care skills, we create competent compassion—a powerful approach that transforms both caregivers and those they support.
