Role 1: Court Dramatization (Lawyer)

Dramatized reading based strictly on Winnipeg Free Press reporting (Nov. 1985).

Voice: formal, restrained, procedural, like reading evidence into the record.

LAWYER (measured, reading from file):

“Earlier that day, the accused telephoned Mrs. Alcorn. He stated that he was coming by the residence to see the boys.”

A pause. Papers slide. A brief courtroom hush.

“That call is part of the Crown’s evidence regarding the events leading up to the fatal shooting.”

Sound Design: courtroom air, distant paper shuffle, microphone adjusting.

Role 2: News Reporter

Measured newsroom read, like an evening news court recap (not true-crime narration).

Voice: calm, professional, neutral, steady pace. No dramatic emphasis.

REPORTER (measured, newsroom tone):

“From the Court of Queen’s Bench today—
testimony revealed that Eve Alcorn had endured years of violence before the shooting in Lord Roberts.
She told the jury her husband would come home drunk after union meetings, sometimes attacking her, sometimes forcing himself on her.”

“On January 8th, she said, he left the family home, taking his clothes—and a rifle.
Days later, she told the court, he phoned to say he was thinking of killing both Don Gretsinger and himself.”

Role 3: Police Scanner

Archival-style radio traffic. Procedural, clipped, unemotional.

Voice: short, matter-of-fact dispatch reads. Not dramatic.

Police Scanner (archival-style):

“Suspect not on scene. Repeat: suspect not on scene.”

“Three children reported inside the residence.”

“Units en route.”

Role 4: Child (Schoolyard)

A single line. Casual, offhand, unthinking, not acted up.

Voice: flat, quick, like it’s tossed out while walking past.

Child: “Murderer’s kid.”
